Lessons In Gratitude
Nature inspires.
Nature heals.
Nature educates.
As much as nature can inspire, heal and educate people, if we look around in our house there are many objects we are surrounded by that also imparts some form of learning if we pay heed to them. They too seem to have a therapeutic effect on us and they seem to teach us one thing or the other.
Like when I looked around my living room, I realised that there are many items in the room that made me think about their purpose of existence. Other than beautifying the interiors of my house, they also seem to have their raison d'être.
I extend my gratitude to these objects for teaching me some valuable life lessons.
1. Wind Chime - Hung on the wall more as a showpiece than a wind chime, it seems you have been robbed of your identity. Wind can hardly tickle you to make you lively and jingle and tinkle. Yet, you are there all poised and calm and seem to be waiting for the day when even a whiff of the wind can set you in rhythmic motion and help you regain your lost identity.
#GratitudeLesson - We are not complete in ourselves. There’s always something outside us : something without that makes us feel within. Be grateful to that something - tangible or intangible - that gives us an identity. For example, the thoughts gathered from observation and experiences and the food that is consumed make us what we are.
2. Newspaper articles on the wall - You have been dissociated from the place of your origin just like an infant who is disconnected from its mother by cutting the umbilical cord. Slightly crinkled because of neglect, you have turned yellowish and dull. However, the physical infirmity has not bereaved you of the knowledge you still consist of. The words and wisdom you possess are still intact and indelible.
#GratitudeLesson - Say a prayer of thanks to Goddess Saraswati for bestowing us with the knowledge and the wisdom to use that knowledge. Words of wisdom can make more impact than the physical beauty we exhibit.
3. Photo frames - Whether you are put up on the wall or made to stand on a single leg on the top of the cabinet, you demonstrate strength and radiate happiness. Aware of the fact that you gain value not simply because of the wooden and the glass frame that binds you together but because of the pictures within the frame, you still enjoy playing a supporting role.
#GratitudeLesson - Be grateful that we have at least been given a chance to play a supporting role or cameo in someone’s life even though it is not as significant as being the centre stage.
4. Indoor plants - You are tended from time to time. You are nurtured with utmost love and care. You have been provided a room of your own where you can enjoy each other’s company and feel at home. Despite all the attention you gain, sometimes you tend to become insensitive to touch and warmth.
#GratitudeLesson - It is not always necessary that our love and warmth are reciprocated. Sometimes even if we try our best to sustain a relationship or make someone's life better, it may not grow as per our expectations. However, acknowledge the fact that we have at least someone to express our love for.
5. Old furniture - Stoical and steady, you stand there for years and years. True to your nature, immobility and stagnancy haven’t deterred your will to serve your purpose of providing comfort. Different weathers may have weathered your shine but not your inner strength.
#GratitudeLesson - Immobility in the body shouldn't stagnant our mental, emotional and spiritual progress. Be grateful to be blessed with a critical and creative mind that helps us to identify our strengths and weaknesses, thus helping us to grow as a person.
6. Refrigerator - You are the storehouse of many food items. You persevere to keep the taste and quality of these items intact as long as you can. Certain food items can be preserved for over a period of 6 months or more as well. However, after a certain time, food stored in you also becomes inedible and unhealthy.
#GratitudeLesson - We humans are also a storehouse of innovative ideas and possibilities. Learn to appreciate the opportunities we are blessed with so as to actualize these ideas stored in us. These ideas, if not used on time, may go wasted and die since our mind may not be able to sustain them for long.
7. Sets of crockery - Colourful and beautiful. Pleasing to eyes but many of you are not used regularly. You are put there in the hope to be used some day. You are just brought out of the cabinet to be cleaned once or twice during festivals. For me it’s the Diwali time when I clean you and place you in the same cabinet, though on a different shelf, to be taken out in the next year.
#GratitudeLesson - Amidst the chaos of life, cleansing and cleaning of our soul is required once in a while. Be grateful for the time we are blessed with to dust the dirt that may blind our vision so that we look prettier and pleasing to ourselves and others too.
8. Books on the shelf - Many of you are read and re-read; some of you are partially read. And a few of you are still waiting to be read. Despite the privilege or the lack of it, you still stand in solidarity. Neither you soar in pride nor surrender to the green-eyed. You are simply happy to be where you are.
#GratitudeLesson - Be happy and appreciative with what and where we are. Respect our existence without comparing ourselves with someone else's position and status in life. United (by love and respect) we will stand; divided (by jealousy and anger) we may fall.
Look around in your house and see if there is any object that can teach you a new lesson of life. Does it fill your heart with gratitude?
